Sustainable Skincare Ingredients You Should Be Using

Natural, clean, and sustainable skincare is all the rage.

While it sure is a breath of fresh air to be able to read our beauty bottle ingredients and know what the words mean, the world of sustainable skincare has also become a sea of buzzwords. I cannot be the only one wondering which ingredients are really good for my skin, and which ones are just wrong. What exactly is sustainable beauty and which sustainability products should we be using? I, for one, love vegan, natural ingredients and wanted nothing more than to get to the bottom of this question plaguing eco-friendly beauty lovers like myself.

So we at Kinder Beauty dug around and ultimately discovered the best sustainable skincare ingredients out there that everyone should definitely look into using. Not only that, but we also hunted down the best cruelty-free products to make introducing these superfoods into your routine as easy as “add to cart.” Organic ingredients have never been so gorgeous.

Probiotics

Kombucha for your skin? Well, yeah.

Probiotics have evolved past just oral applications and have arrived in our skincare products. Just as fermented foods help support our immune system in processing toxins, fermented skincare can help our skin get rid of that ever lingering problem-causing bacteria.

Bacteria on our skin can throw off their natural pH balance and oxidize our skin cells. This can result in damage causing dull or aged-looking skin. Using fermented beauty products with probiotics will help support detoxification. We obviously only recommend vegan probiotics containing no animal derivatives.

This AO+ Restorative Mist from Mother Dirt is a first-of-its-kind product that uses live and active probiotics to help create radiant and healthier skin.

CBD

From stress gummies to our beauty counters, CBD seems to be everywhere these days—and for good reason.

This versatile, sustainable superfood can really do it all. Like those cult CBD gummies can help reduce stress, high-quality CBD on your skin can help with that, too.

CBD in your skincare is extremely powerful, due to it being a powerful antioxidant and providing anti-inflammatory benefits. These crucial benefits can help control oil production, reduce inflammation, and help hydrate dry skin. The beauty industry is obsessed with CBD, and we get why.

Have acne-prone skin? Give this CBD-infused gel cleanser from Truly a try. Hemp goes to work to calm irritated skin while salicylic acid helps exfoliate (bye-bye, dead skin!) and wash the dirt off the skin.

Clay

There are few things that leave me feeling as detoxed as a clay mask does.

Clay masks come with a laundry list of good benefits including brightening skin, hydrating dry or sensitive skin, restoring skin balance, and regulating sebum production making this sustainable skincare ingredient a no-brainer to add to your routine. This will soon be one of your favorite personal care products.

This triple threat mask from Youth to the People packs three types of clay for the ultimate deep clean. Volcanic and French Green clays are included as natural detoxifiers that have pollution-binding properties to help draw out impurities deep within the skin’s layers. White clay, on the other hand, is a mineral-rich multitasker that works to gently exfoliate, smooth, and absorb excess oil without over-drying. The active ingredients here are extremely nourishing.

Bonus: this clay mask also has a touch of probiotics for an ultimate superfood duo.

Aloe Vera

Summer’s go-to sustainable ingredient is getting an upgrade.

While straight-up aloe gel is certainly still an amazing addition to your summer beauty counter, this skin-soothing super ingredient is popping up all over, and does more than just deal with that sunburn.

Aloe vera is an incredibly diverse ingredient. It is a great natural moisturizer and helps to fight skin aging. It also works to reduce acne and lightens dark spots. This is basically the definition of natural skincare.

Delia Organics's Wake Up Moisturizing Lotion with Sweet Orange & Aloe is a godsend for those warmer mornings when you wake up already flushed or after cleansing at the end of a long, hot day. Not only is it a calming lotion formulated with aloe, but the addition of chamomile and calendula makes for the ultimate soothing, lightweight moisturizer. Even better, this lotion also contains witch hazel, making it a 2-1 toner and moisturizer—a multi-tasking, all-natural summer miracle.

Green Tea

Green tea is another superfood ingredient making the move from our drinking glasses and into our sustainable skincare routines.

Green tea is also loaded with antioxidants. It helps to soothe the appearance of redness and increase clarity. It also goes the extra mile to help balance all skin types and particularly great on blemish-prone skin. Green tea is one of those natural products you probably already have in your cupboard.

This Organic Jasmine Water Toner from Herbivore is infused with green tea along with a clarifying combination of Salicin-rich willow bark and the almighty aloe vera. Spritz this on your fresh face in the morning for all-day dewiness and hydration.

Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil is becoming mighty popular in the beauty space with the sustainable skincare ingredient appearing in products for skin, hair, and nails.

The hearty jojoba plant grows across North America and thrives in harsh, desert climates. The nut of the plant is what gives with the ingredient healing properties used in our beauty products by some of our favorite beauty brands.

Jojoba oil is extremely moisturizing and works to seal your skin with a protective barrier to keep in moisture. This oil is so popular when it comes to skincare because the properties so closely resemble sebum from humans that our bodies cannot tell the difference, making this hypoallergenic ingredient non-comedogenic, as well.

Use this sustainable and vegan jojoba oil from Typology to address oily skin, overproduction of sebum, and hydrate skin. It also works wonders on hair to address greasy and dull hair.

Turmeric

Turmeric has been used for centuries in skincare for its extraordinary powers in brightening and balancing skin tone.

Adding turmeric products into your routine will help you achieve overall better skin radiance and a smoother complexion.

This Turmeric Brightening Polish from Volition Beauty pairs powerhouses turmeric, olive oil, and sesame oil for a gentle exfoliating product ideal to tackle uneven skin texture and acne-prone skin.
