6 Ways to Veganize Your Nighttime Skincare Routine
Take note: Your nighttime skincare routine is mega-important. Not only does it set the stage for healthy morning skin, but it also allows your skin to rehydrate and breathe while you sleep, sans makeup. While there isn’t a one-size-fits-all routine, there is a basic foundation that everyone should have in place. Once you have that down, adapting it to fit your lifestyle and your vegan and cruelty-free requirements doesn’t have to be difficult. Read on for six ways to perfect your vegan nighttime skincare routine for glowing skin every morning.
1. Makeup remover
Sleeping with your makeup on is the number-one skincare sin. Because a basic cleanser isn’t always enough to remove everything, start your nighttime routine with a gentle makeup remover. Pay particular attention to removing eye makeup—especially that stubborn mascara and liquid eyeliner—and be gentle. Look for vegan makeup removers that effectively wash away your day, such as the Switch 2 Pure Konjac Sponge, featured in Kinder Beauty's June 2020 box.
2. Cleanser
Wash your face with a vegan cleanser every single night, even if you’re not wearing makeup. Be sure to choose a cleanser that is right for your skin type. Try a gentle cleanser such as Willing Beauty Do Over Cleanser, featured in the March 2020 Kinder Beauty Box. A thorough cleanse with the right cleanser should remove the daily dirty and pore-clogging oils that have built up throughout the day without leaving your skin parched. Use lukewarm water and be gentle with your skin—don’t rub vigorously!—and lightly pat your face dry with a soft towel.
3. Masks and exfoliators
This is optional if you’re in a hurry, but it’s a good step to incorporate once or twice a week. While your skin naturally renews itself when you’re young, after the age of 30, the process begins to slow down, which can result in a duller complexion. Vegan face masks such as the WAN Cosmetics: Anti-Oxidation Mask, featured in the August 2020 Kinder Beauty Box, do the trick.
4. Toner
Follow up with a vegan toner. This is often a missed step in most skincare routines, but its benefits include replenishing your complexion with necessary moisture and balancing pH levels. Go for natural vegan toners such as the Gypsy Soul Organics Face Toner, featured in Kinder Beauty's June 2020 box.
5. Face oil and serum
Your nighttime routine should always include a serum or oil. Products such as Franklin & Whitman Walnut Hill Facial Serum featured in the Kinder Beauty May 2020 box contain concentrated amounts of active ingredients to target specific skin conditions. Importantly, serums also help neutralize the visible effects of drying environmental stressors. Apply a few drops directly on your face each evening and gently massage it in, or mix it into your other skincare products for added glow.
6. Moisturizer
The final step that isn’t up for debate; a healthy finishing moisturizer is essential for the skin to retain hydration and repel drying and damaging irritants. Opt for a richer night cream such as the Earth Harbor Mermaid Milk Moisturizer, featured in Kinder Beauty's July 2020 box. Use it in the evening (and even more so in the winter) so that your skin remains soft, supple, and protected. This step not only smooths dry skin but also provides support for the skin’s natural lipid barrier. You’ll fall asleep knowing your skin is well cared for.
