5 Signs Proving that Vegan Beauty is the Future
Look far enough in the past and you will uncover all kinds of outrageous ways that people suffered for their beauty. Today you would be hard-pressed to find a person who would bind their feet, wear radioactive face cream, or paint their face with toxic lead makeup in order to look good.
But years ago, people did all of those things.
Now, not only is the tide turning away from torturing ourselves in order to look gorgeous, but the evolution of beauty is seeing a dramatic movement away from causing harm to any animal.
The cosmetics industry and makeup-lovers are realizing that the future is vegan, and embracing an abundance of products that deliver beauty without the use of animal products or cruel animal testing. With advances in technology, and increased awareness of the suffering animals have endured for the sake of the cosmetics industry, there is a mass movement among consumers and makeup companies toward vegan products.
The trajectory is clear. We are moving in a compassionate direction.
Here are 5 significant signs that vegan beauty is the future for all of us.
1. Globally, 39 countries have now passed laws that ban cosmetics animal testing. Though animal testing is still legal in the United States, in 2018 and 2019, California, Nevada, and Illinois all passed legislation that banned animal-tested cosmetics. Worldwide, the public and the cosmetics industry are moving in a cruelty-free direction.
2. Gone are the days when there were only a handful of vegan lipsticks on the market (that were only available at health food stores). Major retailers, from Target to Nordstrom, are stocking more vegan cosmetics than ever. And there are a growing number of all-vegan makeup brands to choose from. At Kinder, we do the work for you, curating those must-have products from the plentiful vegan options that are now (finally) available for us to indulge in.
3. Major cosmetics companies are making big investments into finding ways to test their products without subjecting innocent animals to testing. L’Oréal now has its own laboratory that is developing non-animal test methods. Cover Girl has also been pursuing a cruelty-free status. No cosmetics company is too massive to admit the cruelty of animal testing. The biggest makeup giants are pursuing animal-free methods of testing whether their products are safe for humans. It is a new day in the cosmetics industry.
4. Animal testing is the source of suffering for countless animals every year. In addition to dozens of countries banning the cruel practice, there are now more than 1,000 companies that are certified cruelty-free. With so much movement in a compassionate direction, the future is looking brighter with each passing year.
5. Major media outlets, from The New York Times to Cosmopolitan have gotten wind of the growing popularity of vegan makeup, and covered the the rise of animal-free cosmetics in major features. It wasn’t too long ago that vegan makeup was ignored by beauty editors and shrugged off by those in the cosmetics industry as a niche, only relevant to a tiny percentage of the population. Today, the biggest media outlets globally are covering the rapid rise of vegan makeup.
